The Ethics & Application of Touch in Breathwork
Touch can be supportive, grounding and meaningful. It can also carry a lot of complexity. Explore both the ethics and practical application of physical touch in this supportive and confidence building breathwork course.
Unsure About Touch in Breathwork?
In breathwork and other somatic practices, using touch well requires more than knowing where to place a hand. It asks us to consider consent, purpose, timing, power, context and the individual needs of the person we are working with.
This course is being developed as a nuanced exploration of both the ethical use and practical application of touch in breathwork. It will help practitioners think more carefully about why they are using touch, what they are hoping it will support, how to apply it appropriately, and when a completely hands-off approach may be the better choice.
What We’ll Explore
The full curriculum is still in development, but the training will explore areas including:
consent and ongoing communication around touch
power dynamics and professional boundaries
how touch can influence nervous system responses
the intention and purpose behind different forms of touch
practical ways touch may be used to support grounding, awareness and connection
recognising when touch may be unwanted, unnecessary or inappropriate
adapting touch to the individual rather than relying on fixed techniques
developing confidence in working effectively both with and without physical touch
The emphasis will be on developing thoughtful, responsive practice rather than teaching touch as a set formula.
Touch, Consent and Application
Consent is more than receiving a “yes” before a session begins.
People can change their minds. Responses can shift in the moment. Practitioners also carry responsibility for considering whether touch is appropriate, useful and within scope, even when permission has been given.
Alongside this, we will explore the practical side of touch: how it can be offered, how intention and pressure matter, how to remain responsive to feedback, and how to recognise when less intervention may be more supportive.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is for breathwork facilitators, coaches and practitioners who currently use touch in their work, are considering introducing it, or want to develop a more skilled and ethically grounded approach to its use.
It may also be relevant to professionals working in other somatic and wellbeing practices where physical touch forms part of the practitioner-client relationship.
